Unlike some other churches, we don’t operate under a hierarchy.
Instead, we’re organised by groups of women and men, lay and ordained. We operate through a series of inter-related councils — local churches, regional Presbyteries, state synods, and the national Assembly. Each council has its distinct tasks, and each council recognises the limits of its responsibilities in relation to other councils.
We all work together and make decisions by consensus in each area of the Church’s life for the benefit of all.
The Uniting Church in Australia is comprised of six Synods across Australia:
Our Congregations and members are diverse in age, location and culture. We are connected by a single story, worshipping every week in more than 40 languages. We are a fellowship of reconciliation, living God’s love and acting for the common good to build a just and compassionate community. The Uniting Church is the third-largest Christian denomination in Australia.
